EXPERIENCE

Stranmillis has over 700 school and community work-based placement partners, providing enriching professional and service learning opportunities. Your Study Abroad placement will provide you with an immersive, cultural learning experience teaching in an international classroom, volunteering in a local youth club or working in a community based organisation. Your placement is supervised by a member of the Stranmillis faculty, who will observe you on placement visit and provide weekly tutorial support. Students must have a Tier 4 visa in order to complete professional placements or undertake volunteer work in schools or youth/ community based settings. Placements can account for up to 50% of your Study Abroad programme.

TEACHING PRACTICUM

On a teaching placement, you will gain valuable practicum experience in a local school where you will assist in the planning, preparation and delivery of lessons to pupils. You will be supported in the classroom by the supervising teacher. Classroom experiences are offered in Nursery, Primary and Post Primary schools (Pre K – 12). We are also able to offer Special School placements for those students on Special Education programmes.

TEACHING ASSISTANT PRACTICUM

For education students with limited classroom experience in your home country or students completing degrees in other subjects, it is possible to undertake a teaching assistantship in a local school. This placement gives you the opportunity to gain experience working with children in a classroom setting, providing support to the class teacher and working with small groups of pupils to facilitate learning.

YOUTH AND COMMUNITY SERVICE LEARNING

In addition to the experience gained through work-based professional practice, Stranmillis has strong relationships with more than 70 community education and charity partners, such as Young Life, Youth Link NI and Barnardo’s, offering a range of placement or service learning opportunities. This option can be combined with an academic course in Young People, Community and Culture.

Northern Ireland has one of the most vibrant faith based sectors in the world, making it a fabulous option for Christian education and youth ministry students.
